U.S. Army Top Fuel driver Tony "The Sarge" Schumacher’s sixth straight NHRA Top Fuel World Championship is one he and the U.S. Army family will never forget. Upon receiving his championship trophy, “The Sarge” quickly announced it was headed to Fort Hood (Tex.) and dedicated this title to the families of the shooting tragedy which took place on-base recently.
The title-clinching weekend of racing at Auto Club Raceway in Pomona (Ca.) put a wrap on the dramatic 2009 racing campaign which saw Tony record five wins in seven final round appearances. Those victories pushed his NHRA career win total to a record 61. In addition, the Top Fuel title was the 10th overall NHRA championship for the U.S. Army Racing team, and the first with new crew chief Mike Green at the helm. Schumacher’s six titles is a continuation of the excellence started by Don “The Snake” Prudhomme and the U.S. Army NHRA team in the 1970s – which captured four consecutive NHRA Funny Car titles from 1975-1978.
